The story of Vipp began in 1939, in the small Danish town of Randers, when Marie asked her husband Holger Nielsen to create a trash bin for her new hair salon. The bin, which he named Vipp, was never intended to be sold. However, some of Marie's clients were so impressed by its functionality that they ordered it for their husbands' medical offices and dental clinics. The Vipp bin was sold exclusively to professionals until the early 1990s when Holger and Marie's daughter, Jette Egelund, took over the business and turned the Vipp pedal bin into an international design icon. In recent years, Vipp has exhibited at the Louvre Museum in Paris and collaborated with several international designers, such as Sir Terence Conran, Christian Lacroix, and Philippe Starck, to create works of art that were sold at charity auctions.
Praised since its creation for both its functionality and aesthetics, the Vipp pedal bin is now considered one of the major pieces of Scandinavian design. Vipp is now a brand renowned for its trash bins and bathroom accessories, but it also produces furniture for the entire home.
