In its reissue,
Camaleonda retains the elements that made it a contemporary classic. By mutual agreement,
Mario Bellini and the founder of
B&B Italia, Pierre Ambrogio Busnelli, chose to keep the 90x90 cm seat module, along with the backrest and armrests, faithful to the original design. The original templates for cutting the upholstery were also recovered. The generous polyurethane padding, which forms the characteristic tufting, remains unchanged. It is achieved through Bellini’s innovative system of cables, hooks, and rings designed in 1970, ensuring the sofa’s appearance and modularity. Thanks to these cables and rings, the modules can be detached and recomposed at will, allowing the sofa to adapt to the evolving tastes and dynamic needs of its users. Architect and designer Mario Bellini has a particular view on his creation: “Among all the objects I’ve designed,
Camaleonda is undoubtedly the one that best represents the concept of freedom. The configurations that can be achieved are infinite.” The
Camaleonda sofa was produced from 1970 to 1979. In its nine years of existence, this modular sofa became an undeniable reference in Italian design. It is no surprise that fifty years later,
B&B Italia has brought
Camaleonda back into the spotlight by re-launching its production. The reissue project was initiated in 2019. It took nearly a year to adapt the sofa to current challenges. The materials used in this sofa are recycled and recyclable. The structure of
Camaleonda is made of wood panels, and the spherical feet are crafted from Forest Stewardship Council certified beech wood. Its removable cover, made from dacron (a synthetic fabric entirely made from recycled PET), protects the padding. The seat of
Camaleonda required significant work from the research and development teams at
B&B Italia to ensure the various layers interact with each other and create empty spaces to produce a soft spring-like effect. The
Camaleonda is a dynamic, lively, and sincere object, also modifiable at will while always maintaining its particular and unique identity. A founding feature of
Camaleonda is its practically infinite modularity, a geometric nature that allows each element to become a sort of giant pixel through which one can define their own domestic environment. By attaching and detaching the seats, backrests, and armrests, you have the luxury of changing your mind as many times as you want, shifting and redesigning the space.
Camaleonda presents a magical balance between the rigorous geometry of the square and the welcoming roundness of the padding, further highlighting the elasticity and tactile ergonomics that characterize many of Mario Bellini's design projects.
Camaleonda can be upholstered in the full range of fabrics and leathers from
B&B Italia, allowing for even more possible combinations.
